This month on the 5th of October we will be celebrating World Teacher’s Day – so we decided to honor some of our more prominent Educators from across the Globe.
Currently in 2020, ChessMatec is being taught in over 1000 Schools spread throughout the World! Our comprehensive curriculum provides teachers with prepared lessons for beginner and intermediate students, and the necessary tools to easily create classrooms, import students, and see helpful metrics.
Today – we are giving the stage to one of ChessMatec’s leading Chess Teachers – Amit Meshulam from Israel!
Amit is a Kindergarten Teacher from Israel - she integrated ChessMatec into her educational programs and is teaching Chess to kids starting from just 4 years old!
Where are you from? Tell us a little bit about yourself and your experience in chess training.
I'm from Israel, and I live in the city Holon. I'm married and am a mother to two very energetic boys. Most of my experience in chess training comes from the wonderful method developed by ChessMatec.
How long have you been teaching Chess to kids?
I've been teaching Chess to kids for 2 years.
What tools do you use to teach chess to young kids?
I have several tools for teaching chess for young kids. I use the videos made by ChessMatec. I use the ChessMatec App, which the kids love, and I like to give them Chess puzzles to solve. I give kids the Worksheets designed by ChessMatec which allow them to practice Chess in a different and colorful way. Then there is also the Giant Chess board and dolls that we use for learning and playing - I like to add toys for to better illustrate the game to young kids. I combine workouts and movement games to help kids remember the Chess rules, and I also like to divide them into big groups and let them compete against each-other.
What do you like about ChessMatec?
I like ChessMatec because its an interchangeable program and I can make sure that each Child is progressing at their own pace and according to their level. Whether its by playing and practicing in the App, doing Worksheets or playing on the Giant Chess Board - each child can find their own place in the classroom.
What is your favorite theme to teach children?
I especially like to teach kids about Castling - the look on their faces when they see it for the first time is priceless.
What is the biggest challenge in teaching young kids?
The biggest challenge, from my point of view, is dealing with the kids who disturb the class. It's doable, but sometimes it takes too much of the time from the rest of the students.
What is your secret to being an awesome Chess Teacher?
I think that first a Teacher must love what they do! The next thing is to establish a good connection with the classes and the students and to be flexible. A Kindergarten Teacher especially needs to act in a way that the Kids can relate to. In the end, it’s all about having good energy and creating an uplifting atmosphere to teach the kids in.
What is a piece of advice you can give to parents/teachers who are just starting to teach young kids chess?
Believe in the kids. Don’t judge them - learn what their needs and pace are and adjust the class to their abilities.
The most important thing is to constantly keep encouraging the Kids.
